Book of 1001 Nights backers make $1 million bet

A group of backers for the Arabic translation of the "Book of 1001 Nights" have placed a million dollar bet that the translation will be a success.

The group, who each contributed $1,000 to the Kickstarter campaign, are confident that the book will become a bestseller and are eager to see their investment pay off.

"This is a historic project and we believe in it wholeheartedly," said one backer. "We're all very excited to see it come to fruition."

The crowdfunding campaign raised over $110,000 from over 230 backers, making it one of the most successful translations campaigns on Kickstarter.

The Book of 1001 Nights is a collection of ancient Middle Eastern and Indian folk tales and legends, first translated into English in 1706. The new Arabic translation is being spearheaded by award-winning author Salim al-Jumayli and will be published by Dar al-Salam Publishing House.

How to play Book of 1001 Nights like a pro

1. Familiarize yourself with the game rules

Before you start playing, it is important to know the game rules. The Book of 1001 Nights is a trick-taking game for four players in partnerships. Each player is dealt thirteen cards, and the remaining cards are placed face down in the middle of the table to form a stock. The aim of the game is to score points by taking tricks and fulfilling certain conditions, as explained in detail in the game rules.

1. Select a partner

Once you are familiar with the game rules, you need to select a partner. You can either choose one randomly or based on personal preferences. Most players prefer to play with someone they know well so that they can communicate better during the game.

1. Decide who will be the dealer

The dealer is determined by drawing cards from the deck – the player who draws the highest card becomes the dealer. If two or more players have equal highest ranking cards, then all those players draw another card and whoever draws highest becomes the dealer. In case of another tie, then repeat till there's a clear winner. The deal passes clockwise after each hand.

1. Shuffle and deal thirteen cards to each player

The player sitting to the left of the dealer starts by cutting the deck and then deals thirteen cards clockwise one at a time beginning with himself/herself. After dealing, place whatever remains of the deck, face down, in front of him/her to form a stock.

 5.Turn over first card from stock & put it face up next to stock  

This turned-over card is called 'the trump suit' and remains face up for remainder of game. All other cards are placed face down in front of each player as his/her reserve pile .

6.. Play begins with eldest hand (player on dealers left) playing any card from his hand to begin first trick

First trick is played clockwise & each player must follow suit if possible ie play a card of same suit as led .If unable could follow suit must play any other card .The trick is won by highest trump if played or highest card of suit led if no trump was played .Tricks are added to players' individual tricks piles .

7.. Elder hand leads to next trick , play continuing clockwise around table following normal rules .When somebody cannot follow suit (because all cards have been played), that person either captures (melds) or picks up (draws) from stock

After playing its 13th card (or discarding), when it isn't possible to follow suit due lack of appropriate cards, player picks up 5 new cards from stock and continues playing .You can only capture when you can do so without discarding a high ranking card which then would enable your opponent(s) capturing instead ie Ace captures 3 other Aces but not 2 or 4 etc …..Highest ranking captured goes into your tricks pile as usual whether played or not.(see example below)

8.. Winning team is first one either achieves 61 points or more than opponents cumulative score PLUS last hand bonus ie 10 points …game continues until one team either reaches this point total OR opponents go over (i ..e lose on their last hand). In latter event ,dealer's team loses even if their cumulative score exceeds opponents

Points are scored for taking tricks as follows :- 1 point for ordinary card taken , 2 points for winning Hearts trick (or capturing Jack = 'Knave'), 3 points for winning Diamond Trick , 5 points for winning Club Trick & 10 points for capturing Spades Trick .So overall winner is team scoring most points after subtracting losers points(cards taken in tricks).Setup : Teams sitting opposite each other across table .dealer sits where?
